Description

In the first message, sent May 19, 1961, Greenslip asks the governor ensure the protection of Greyhound's passengers, property, and employees. Because of the recent attacks on the Freedom Riders in Alabama, people around the country have expressed "fear and concern for the public safety and welfare while traveling as passengers on busses in your state." In the second message, sent May 22, 1961, Patterson reminds Greenslip that no damage was done to the bus carrying the Freedom Riders who were attacked in Montgomery on May 20. He then pledges to "use every resource at my command to protect the property and persons of those people traveling on the highways of Alabama."
