In this series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips of Congressman and House Minority Leader Charles Halleck refutes charges that he is against the pending civil rights legislation. The first five of the seven clips are silent; the location is presumably in Washington, D.C.In the opening clip, Congressmen Halleck and Everett Dirksen are seated with microphones on a table. Congressman Dirksen is speaking, but his comments are not recorded. Next there are photographers taking pictures. The next two clips show Congressman Halleck, then Congressman Dirksen. The final silent clip shows an unidentified reporter taking notes. The first part of Congressman Halleck's comments are not recorded, but he then says he is "ready and willing" to help bring the legislation to passage. An unidentified off-camera reporter asks if he is urging his fellow Republicans to sign a discharge petition. Congressman Halleck replies that he is not urging anything one way or the other. He notes that the Democratic majority has other ways to bring forth the legislation if they want to. The final clip shows both Congressmen Halleck and Dirksen. Congressman Halleck comments that the charges that he is against the civil rights legislation are unfounded; that he is for the legislation recommended by the President and reported by the House Judiciary Committee. As the camera moves to a close up of the congressman he notes that the House and the Rules Committee are under Democratic majority and that they ought to be able to pass the legislation that they want.Title supplied by...
