@ New Georgia Encyclopedia

Cleage, Pearl

Description

Video recording of Georgia author Pearl Cleage explaining the idea of writing for an oppressed people, which is in her case African Americans. She sits before several tall African sculptures. She wears a black shirt and faces forward. She begins by stating that she comes from an "activist artist tradition," and she asserts that she is "definitely a product of the sixties [and] of the Black arts movement." She then quotes fellow African American author Toni Cade Bambara in stating that the activist artist must make "revolution irresistible." Cleage explains that this means understanding that change is difficult and tiring but is also rewarding and adventurous.
