Engraved illustration opposite page 205, titled "Bahama Banks, 1767", signed "Barnes & Co Sc".After having been first taken from West Africa to Barbados, and then to Virginia, the author arrived in England aged 12 in 1757. This was the beginning of a life spent mainly at sea or in the West Indies until he was granted his freedom.
