North Carolina Council for Women North Carolina. General Assembly

Description

The Council on the Status of Women started as the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women in 1963 by Governor James Terry Sanford. The Commission was responsible for reviewing areas where women were likely to suffer from discrimination and provide recommendations that can be addressed by the State. The Commission became a permanent state agency in 1965 and was transferred to the North Carolina Department of Administration in 1975. The council reviewed problems associated with employment, education, childcare, and politics. The Executive Director's Subject Files series contain records created and accumulated by the former Executive Director and staff from the Council on the Status of Women. The records cover programs and events addressing local, regional, and statewide concerns for women in North Carolina. Materials include correspondence, directories, copies of newspaper clippings, reports, budget proposals, and more.
