This extremely rare piece is an Akan type drum made of American cedar and deerskin. It was collected in Virginia about 1740 for Sir Hans Sloane, the founder of the British Museum. Since then it has been part of the British Museum's collections, and only now is it being lent to the History and Technology Museum as a contribution to its major Bicentennial exhibition "A Nation of Nations." The drum was flown in especially for inclusion in the exhibition. It has been exhibited in Britain almost continuously for 200 years."Smithsonian Institution Archives, Record Unit 371, Box 02, Folder: May 1976, Image No. 76-3220-08Smithsonian Institution Archives Capital Gallery, Suite 3000, MRC 507; 600 Maryland Avenue, SW; Washington, DC 20024-2520
