Description

Photograph caption dated September 13, 1982 reads, "Members of the Baltic American Freedom League picket at the French consulate to protest the "enslavement" of 10,000 countrymen for the construction of the Soviet gas pipeline to Western Europe. The group's president, Tony Mazeika, said in Beverly Hills yesterday that the forced labor has been documented by the international Society for Human Rights and other groups. He said citizens from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have been taken from camps near the pipeline route and forced to work."
