Plumer, Richard

Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Manuscript annotated on recto, with "To W. L. G." in black ink along header, and "Plumer" in pencil above letterhead address.Richard Plumer informs William Lloyd Garrison that his neighbor Captain Bartlett had written Garrison that day to request Garrison's company at the one hundredth anniversary of the "Newburyport Artillery Company", and that Bartlett had requested Plumer to add a word in favor of his request. Plumer states that he informed Bartlett that Garrison held "far greater love for the teachings of Jesus" concerning loving one's enemies, and that he doubted Garrison would appear at an occasion celebrating "war and killing enemies", even given the good will of Bartlett and Plumer's respect for his neighbor's character.
