National Conference of Christians and Jews

Description

This folder contains materials created/collected by the National Conference on Christians and Jews related to discrimination and race. The National Conference of Christians and Jews, was formed in 1928 to facilitate cooperation between religions on civic and social justice issues and to promote understanding and mutual respect through education and dialogue. The Commission on Educational Organizations was created in 1942 as part of a reorganization of NCCJ. It was an outgrowth of the Committee on Educational Policies chaired by Henry MacCracken, president of Vassar College. The Commission was composed of selected members of the NCCJ board and staff, as well as other specialists in the field. The Commission was devoted to promoting human and intergroup relations through education. A primary outgrowth of the its work was a large number of human relations workshops for teachers that were held on various university campuses. Intergroup and human relations workshops focused on facilitating understanding and community amongst different races, ethnic groups, and religions. Many of the materials deal specifically with perceptions around racial identity in the United States and increasing interactions amongst people in racially segregated educational settings.
