Description
Shirley Martin is walking in by in the background, but her face is not visible. The young women were two of the first three African American students to attend the school. The integration took place in September 1964, when Susie was a sophomore and Shirley was a senior. The image is slightly out of focus. It was taken for (but not used in) the article "Montgomery's First Year of School Integration" by Geoffrey Cowan, which appeared on page 4 of The Southern Courier for August 6, 1965. The issue is available online (not on the ADAH website): http://www.southerncourier.org/low-res/Vol1_No04_1965_08_06.pdf
