McIntosh County Shouters

Description

Photograph of an unidentified member of a performing group from Bolden, Georgia called the McIntosh County Shouters. He wears overalls over a blue shirt and claps his hands. This man is known as a songster. In a ring shout the songster will call out lines, which are answered by a group of singers in a call-and-response pattern. The southeastern ring shout, which is African in origin, is a fusion of counterclockwise dance-like movement, call-and-response singing, and percussion of hand clapping and a stick beating a drum-like rhythm on a wooden floor.
