Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. In the left corner, the number "67" is written in pencil. Purple postmarked stamp that says "Phelps MSS."John Greenleaf Whittier writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding his disapproval of the course of the Liberator. He writes, "I have put forwarded to Garrison a letter in reference to the "Newark Perfectement" letter. I sent a resolution and a letter to the Ess. Co. A.S.Soc. (being unable to attend)-disapproving of the course of the Liberator in this matter but it was voted down." He suggests that "Protests, are decididly unpopular, a simple communication in the Liberator would be best."
