Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. The "Canaan Academy" alluded to by May refers to the Noyes Academy, and is not to be confused with the Canaan Union Academy.Samuel Joseph May writes to William Lloyd Garrison informing him that Henry Barnard ("Chief of the United States Department of Education") is in the process of preparing a report on the schools for African-Americans in Washington, D.C., and that he hopes to have this volume prefaced by an accounting of the manner in which the education of African-Americans has been "regarded and treated in other parts of the country". May states that he has sent to Barnard copies of his articles concerning the Cantebury School, the Petersboro School, the Oneida Institute, Oberlin College, and the New York Central Colleges, as well as having alluded to the "destruction of the Canaan Academy". May begs that Garrison copy the pertinent information concerning this latter event from the published accounts in the Liberator, and mail this to Barnard.
