Description

Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger. This letter is printed in the Liberator of October 31, 1835 (Vol. V, no. 44).On verso, the letter is addressed to "Mr. Wm Lloyd Garrison, Leveret Street Jail, Boston or elsewhere."George Thompson writes to William Lloyd Garrison after hearing about "yesterday's proceedings in Boston" [the anti-Garrison mob] and rejoicing that Garrison has "escaped the jaws of the lion." Thomson questions, "What have our enemies done? What have their tar & feathers, the demolitions, their lacerations, scourgings, and hangings effected?" Have they extinguished the truth? No. Have they shaken our principles? No." He encourages Garrison, telling him to put his trust in God and asserting that "Our principles live & are triumphing in every direction." He also warns that the "opposers of the cause have themselves a bitter lesson to learn," predicting that if the mob rule comes to dominate society "they will be destroyed by the recoil of their own weapons."
