Kelly grew up in Lincoln, NE. She describes her childhood as “idyllic and very sheltered.” Her neighborhood and schools were homogenous. Kelly left Nebraska for college to attend Northwestern in Illinois, where she studied journalism. After college, she moved briefly to Chicago, then San Francisco to work for a magazine. In 2002, she moved to New York to take Columbia University’s publishing course and afterward worked in book publishing. Kelly talks about how she came to live in Crown Heights and how her relationship with the neighborhood has evolved. Initially, she says she was pretty idealistic about the diversity and integration of the neighborhood. When she started looking to buy an apartment she was anxious about displacing someone. Kelly describes the process of buying her apartment as a difficult one In the time since moving in, she has seen the pace of development increase. She talks about her uncomfortability with her role in the system and what she can do to change that. Part of changing this role has been through her children’s education. Kelly talks about the different schools she has sent her kids to, beginning with the Union Temple daycare. It was there that she says she began to understand how parents in New York City work the school system. She talks about meeting a group of parents who planned to send their kids to P.S. 316.
