Description

Alicia Kaplow was the director of Friends of SNCC at the University of Wisconsin for several years. In that role, she raised funds for SNCC, spoke before the UW Board of Regents, tried to arrange visits to Madison from national figures like Pete Seeger and James Foreman, linked sponsors with specific civil rights workers (Adopt a Freedom Worker for $10 a week) and encouraged them to correspond regularly with each other, sponsored at least 17 individual civil rights workers herself, corresponded with black and white volunteers in Mississippi and the disorganized SNCC office staff in Atlanta, and worked on getting black high school students from the South admitted to UW. This collection of letters includes many fascinating first-person accounts of assorted people's experiences: one by a black Hattiesburg resident's experiences on a very cold Freedom Day and the inspiration that Fannie Lou Hamer brought to the occasion.
