Description
Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper. There is a purple postmarked stamp that says "Phelps Mss." In the top left corner, there is the number "41" written in pencil. On the back of the letter, there is a red stamp that says "New York Aug 21." Also on the back of the letter appears to be blocks of annotated notes concerning lectures and sermons written in pencil. It is unclear if this was written by Whittier or someone else.John Greenleaf Whittier writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding his letter to [H.B.] Stanton which "was written without a full knowledge of the facts." He writes of Garrison and explains that "he is his own man & must think and speak his own thoughts." He writes of matters concerning Mr. H.C. Wright, the "Liberator," "The Emancipator," and his health.
