Original charcoal drawing by Daniel R. Fitzpatrick for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The cartoon refers to the Mexican Expedition of 1916 when the United States Army under General John J. Pershing conducted a military operation against the paramilitary forces of Francisco 'Pancho' Villa. Members of the African American 10th Cavalry Regiment participated in the offense and in June 1916 were among the casualties in an engagement with by Mexican Federal troops.
