Murray writes William Lloyd Garrison with no small degree of hesitation on the behalf of his "caus", addressing Garrison as "a good and faithfull friend to [Murray's] Race". Murray recounts that he is a slave, along with his immediate family, owned by "one of the worst of Masters in the State of Mississippi", and that he has succeeded in escaping his bondage. Murray asserts his intention to raise sufficient funds to purchase the freedom of his family left behind in Mississippi, and declares a plan to voyage to Europe to "git up sympathy for my caus". Murray outlines his trials and tribulations on his escape to freedom to Garrison, and requests of Garrison his "influence and assistance" as he is able to provide.
