Description

Photograph taken looking south at the east side of the 200 block South Caroline Street from its intersection with East Pratt Street in Baltimore, Maryland. This block, which consists of two- and three-story brick row houses, including vacant stores on the ground level of some buildings, was scheduled for demolition as part of the Baltimore Housing Authority's slum clearance program. The corner store has advertising for groceries, cigars, candy, Meadow Gold ice cream, and Dr. Pepper soda. On its exterior wall (right) is a painted advertisement for Baltimore American beer. A few doors down the block is an eating place known as the Rank & File Lunch Room. Farther down the block, parked along the curb, are two handcarts used in the salvage of paper and other materials. These handcarts were used by independent businessmen to haul away such items as newspapers to sell, for instance, to vendors at fish markets. In front of the house on East Pratt is a parked car. An African American man appears to be carrying a package to the car. Tracks are embedded in the cobblestone roadway of both streets, although those on Caroline appear to be unused, since they are paved over at the intersection with Pratt. Electric lines for streetcars are suspended above the street. (Waldeck photograph 37.)
