Description

A black and white photograph of Ella P. Stewart Elementary School on Avondale in Toledo, Ohio. The school, named after the country's first African American female pharmacist, opened in 1961. Mrs. Stewart, a staunch supporter of public education, was in attendance for the opening cermony and dedication in November of 1961. In 2003 the school became the Ella P. Stewart Academy for Girls; a same-sex school with required parental involvement. Photo was taken by Toledo Blade Photographer Clarence Bailey in July of 1961.
