Description

Contemporary quilt titled "Twentieth Century Silkie." Predominately red, white and blue, with multiple patterns arranged as borders around a center block. Each pattern references a different period in quilt making. The center block is re-drafted from the book "Old Swedish Quilts" by Asa Wettre, 1900s; framed by an Art Deco style border, 1930s; then a 1960s wide-log version of Courthouse Steps. The black center of this block connects the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s to the Underground Railroad of the 1860s. A Curved Illusion pattern represents the 1980s and finally, a triangle Log Cabin block for the new century. The quilting patterns contain designs reminiscent of the 1800s silk crazy quilts. Made entirely from dupioni, kimono and drapery silks. Machine pieced and quilted by Claudia Clark Myers, Duluth, Minnesota, 2000.
