In this presentation, dated October 31, 1985, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III addresses an audience from the Division of Education Services in Detroit, Michigan. The main focus of the talk is the adaptation of curriculum to include more accurately and fully the contribution of African Americans in several educational subjects, including Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. Hilliard begins by examining the findings of a 1984 report from the National Alliance of Black School Educators, co-authored by Hilliard, titled Saving the African American Child. He then turns to a discussion of curriculum adaptation efforts he led in Portland, Oregon, which were carried out in an effort to desegregate Portland Public Schools more fully by including a more diverse curriculum. Hilliard also speaks at length about African and African American historical topics, including human origins, Ancient Egypt, slavery, and African American contributions in the arts and sciences. He draws on the work of such scholars as Cheikh Anta Diop to illustrate the historical contributions of people of African descent.
