Koudedie Ly introduces herself; she’s 12 years old and attends M.S. 353. She talks about how she likes the teachers at her school because they treat the students like family. Koudedie chose this school because it’s close to her house and her oldest brother went there. She talks about starting at the school and being sort of nervous because some students are mean and not open to people that are different from them. Despite that, Koudedie says she doesn’t think its good to change your personality to fit in better. She has found a group of friends where everyone has their own “weirdness” and her favorite part of the school day is lunch when they get to hang out with each other and be themselves. Koudedie is asked about diversity in her school and neighborhood. She says she thinks people are separated now, even though it’s not the law anymore, especially now that Donald Trump is president. At her school most of the students are black, and speculates that white kids stay away from the school because of stereotypes. Koudedie talks about what will be important to her when she picks a high school next year. Education is really valued in her family because her parents came to this country from Senegal so that their children would have more educational opportunities.
