Description

Button "March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom August 28, 1963"around a design of black and white hands shaking. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty (1963–68) had a major impact on the racial and ethnic composition of the workforce. Increasingly many individuals found fewer racial barriers to higher-paying manufacturing and white-collar jobs. Rather than falling victim to laboring in apparel sweatshops, some workers turned to alternatives in the service industries or even public assistance.Currently not on view
