Historic Images of the SmithsonianLetter from Solomon G. Brown, the first African American employee of the Smithsonian Institution, to then Assistant Secretary Spencer F. Baird, and later second Secretary, reporting on the possible danger in Washington, D.C., due to Confederate troops nearby.
