Description
As the first African American smokejumper starting in 1977, Pferron Doss discusses the attitudes of both jumpers and management toward minority employees. He describes his training in Missoula, Montana, and jumping out of bases in Washington, Oregon, and California. Doss talks about how his perspective about the profession changed when he moved into a management role. He also mentions the shift from people smokejumping as seasonal employment to pursuing it as a career.
