Description

Letter regarding Hays' 1958 defeat November 12, 1958 Dear Brooks: I'm shattered! What a trick of fate to have this happen to you by a write-in when you had so plainly won on the issue in an openly contested election as shown in the primary. I only hope that wrong conclusions about the fate that necessarily awaits people who take a reasonable stand on the segregation issue will not deter people elsewhere. One consolation is that your hands will be freed for speaking and writing during this coming two years and there never has been a time when we've needed a clear, wise and prophetic voice more than we do now. I hope you will be able to take maximum advantage of the opportunity. Please let me know if there is any way at all I can be useful. With admiration and best wishes always. Sincerely, Dan Lacy [Managing Director American Book Publishers Council, Incorporated] The Honorable Brooks Hays House Office Building Washington 25, D.C. DL:af
