Description
This series of WSB-TV newsfilm clips includes shots and interviews of the ground breaking ceremony at the Bankhead Highway housing project. The first series of clips are silent, opening with a shot of a large tree then panning down to show Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr. speaking before a crowd and standing in front of a large development map. There are shots of the largely African American crowd and of Mayor Allen shaking hands with the people. There is a close shot of the development sign showing the overall layout for the and the various sizes of apartments. The sound begins with Mr. Francis B. Sheetz, Jr., one of the architects from Sheetz and Bradfield, Architects, Inc. who designed the buildings. He notes that many of the people who will be living in these new units will have to learn how to use the facilities such as toilets, sinks, and electric ranges, which many of them have never encountered before. This is followed by another series of silent clips of the crowd and of the official group of people, including Dr. Benjamin Mays, President-emeritus of Morehouse College. Allen, Mays, and one other unidentified official together make the ceremonial first shovel of dirt for the ground breaking. Before the sound begins again, there is a shot of reporter Jim Whipkey (back to camera) and Mr. Sheetz.
