1964 Topps round, metal, orange colored bottle cap #141 with a color photograph of All-Star Bill White, National League first baseman on the front and statistics on reverse. Bill White was one of many All-Stars featured on milk bottle caps to encourage fans to acquire each cap in the collection.Bill White was a well-known first baseman, the first play-by-play African American major league broadcaster, and the first African American president of the National League. During his thirteen seasons, he played for numerous teams, including the Giants (1956, 1958), Cardinals (1959-65, 1969), and Phillies (1967-68). White missed the 1957 season while serving in the United States Army. During his time with the Cardinals, he helped the team win the World Series in 1964 and played at the National League All-Star game from 1959 to 1961 and again in 1963 and 1964. Between 1960 and 1966, he won a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. After retiring in 1969, White joined the New York Yankees broadcast team and regularly announced games from 1971 to 1988. In 1989, White was elected as president of the National League and served as the organization’s first African American leader until 1994.Currently not on view
