Description

Born Norfolk, VirginiaMary Peake exemplifies the achievements and limits that were placed on freed African Americans during the nineteenth century. The daughter of a free black woman and a prominent Englishman, Peake was educated in Alexandria, Virginia. While supporting herself as a dressmaker, she secretly began teaching from her home, instructing African Americans of all ages. Her work as an educator gained the attention of Reverend Lew C. Lockwood, a representative of the American Missionary Association, who eventually wrote her biography, of which this portrait serves as the frontispiece.
