Schorr, Alvin Louis

Description

This folder contains materials created/collected by Alvin Schorr, reflecting his influential career in the field of social work, in both the government and academic sectors, including his work in the Office of Economic Opportunity and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare reflect the growth of AFDC, the War on Poverty, and the Poor People's March on Washington in 1968. This file specifically contains materials created/collected by Schorr in the run-up and aftermath of the Poor People's March on Washington. Envisioned by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and carried out by Ralph Abernathy after King's assassination, the Poor People's Campaign was an effort to ensure economic justice for those suffering with poverty. The multi-racial movement, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans, set up a 3,000 person protest camp on the Washington Mall for six weeks in 1968. Their demands included an ""economic bill of rights"" that asked the federal government to enact a 30 billion dollar package including a guaranteed annual income and an increase in low-income housing.
