Shirley Nero, a 1992 graduate of Oklahoma State University with a masters degree in History, discusses her youth in Clearview, Oklahoma, where she attended a segregated school until high school. Nero shares some of her memories of country living and of her parents. She talks about integration and her decision to earn an undergraduate degree in home economics from a college in Ada, Oklahoma, and explains some of the activities she was involved in to improve the college experience for her fellow African American students. Nero outlines her career as a teacher of social studies and her interest in revitalizing the town of Clearview. Nero represents Okfuskee County in the Cowboys in Every County project.The O-STATE Stories Oral History collection is comprised of interviews which chronicle the rich history, heritage, and traditions of Oklahoma State University.
