Description

Collection of the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum & Library, Lexington, Massachusetts. USM 300.006You are respectfully invited to accompany the Peace Makers on an excursion to a quiet retreat on a salt marsh, near the Atlantic. Dated 1863. This satirical invitation to a fictitious political gathering invites Peace Democrats or “Copperheads” to a retreat on a salt marsh, a wordplay on the political slogan “salt river,” a metaphor for a losing political campaign. Speakers include General George B. McClellan, who would run as the Democratic Party candidate for President against Lincoln in 1864. Imprint on the reverse reads, “Edwards’, [Phot]ograph [Printing] Establishment, [No. 1338 C]hestnut Street.”
