Description

The founding meeting of the Christian Street YMCA was held June, 26, 1889 at the home of William Still, a nationally prominent social activist and business man. Chris Perry, founder of the Philadelphia Tribune newspaper, along with two bishops of the Philadelphia-based African Methodist Episcopal Church, were among ten who convened that day at Still's home at 244 South 12th Street. The Christian Street YMCA is the fourth African American YMCA in the United States, and is the first African American YMCA in Philadelphia. Dr. Frank (Tick) Coleman (1912-2008) (standing 2nd, far left) was an exemplary educator, civic and community leader, and former star athlete. He was an Emeritus Trustee and a 1935 alumnus of Lincoln University. Dr. Coleman, a longtime South Philadelphia resident, recently was presented with the prestigious 2004 John Wanamaker Humanitarian Award in recognition for having devoted 80 years of service to the Christian Street YMCA in South Philadelphia.
