Founded in 1773, the Maryland Journal and Baltimore Advertiser was one of the earliest newspapers published in Maryland. In the picture, a man is shown leaning against the building, reading a newspaper. To the right is a boy selling a newspaper to man passing by. In the foreground walking in the street are an African American woman and child. She is carrying a basket, filled with what looks like crockery, on her head.
