Congress of Racial Equality. Mississippi Fourth Congressional District
Description
This folder shows--from inside COFO--the range of emotions associated with Freedom Summer and its aftermath. It contains three lists of civil rights staff: a May 1964 list of Freedom Summer staff listed by Mississippi project location and giving their hometowns and group affiliation (SNCC, CORE, SCLC, etc.). A similiar list from June 29, 1964, lists both COFO volunteers and staff working in the state. A final, much smaller list, lists the staff workers for winter 1964-spring 1965. There are a couple of sets of COFO meeting minutes, one from a personnel committee meeting and another from a meeting about problems in the Jackson office. There's a description of the administrative structure of the COFO office in Jackson. Several issues of the COFO newsletter from Freedom Summer--Now: The Voice of Freedom--report on new state legislation designed to impede civil rights work, expulsion of protesting students at Alcorn College, MFDP events, police harassment, and the Summer Project.
