The arch over the window is painted with the face of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and it reads "Southern Christian Leadership Conference. SCLC founder Martin Luther King Jr. Joseph E. Lowery President." In 1977 Lowery succeeded Ralph Abernathy as president of the SCLC, which has been based in Atlanta since its inception in 1957.
