Image of Hale Woodruff's 1951 mural Art of the Negro: Muses, which hangs in the gallery at Clark Atlanta University, where Woodruff taught art for fifteen years. The mural depicts African American men throughout history.During the 1930s and 1940s, Woodruff, a prominent African American artist, was a member of Atlanta University's faculty and taught classes at Spelman. Inspired by the Mexican muralists, Woodruff completed three mural series over the course of his career. His other murals are entitled The Amistad Mutiny (1939) and The Negro in California History (1949).
