Description

Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989.Dodgers vice president Al Campanis (right), welcomes outfielder Frank Robinson to the Dodgers in 1972. Three year later, after his retirement, Robinson became the first African-American manager in the Major Leagues, with the Cleveland Indians. Campanis must have forgotten about this: some 15 years after this photo was taken, he appeared on "Nightline" on the 40th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color line and said that Blacks "may not have some of the necessities to be a field manager or general manager." The Dodgers fired Campanis that week. Photograph dated January 12, 1972.
