Description

Back of the photograph of Liza Waler states that she is on Bois d'Arc street, which is located in the Zion Hill Historic District of Nacogdoches, Texas. "The district's history closely parallels that of other such black enclaves near and in cities in East Texas and throughout the South after the Civil War. Black communities grew along the edges of established, predominantly white communities so that black workers could live as close as possible to places of employment. The Zion Hill area was home primarily to service workers: shop porters, servants, maids, cooks, and grounds keepers for affluent white families, and in a few cases, small business owners." (Information from: Beth Savage, Carol D. Shull, and Rama Ramakrishna, eds., African American Historic Places: National Register of Historic Places (New York: Wiley, 1996), 485). The date of the photograph is unknown.
