Description

On January 1, 1996, Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III spoke to inmates at the Augusta Correctional Facility in Augusta, Georgia. The title of the presentation was “Augusta Black History Program: Imani, Faith: in oneself, our ancestors, and our future.” Dr. Hilliard’s presentation focused on the history of people of African descent, particularly during the period of Ancient Egypt. He explores the achievements of the people of Ancient Egypt, arguing that the country should be called Kemet, since that was their name for themselves. Hilliard focuses on the skin color and facial features of royal mummies from the earliest dynasties to demonstrate the African characteristics of each of them. He also discusses the prevalence of people of African descent throughout other areas of the world, including Hawaii, the Philippines, and China.
