Pickens regrets he cannot be present at Du Bois's birthday celebration: "I will be in the west, pursuing the work to which Dr. DuBois inspired me years ago. I lit my little candle in the fire of his Sun, and I expect to carry it forward as long as I live, -- and to try to hand it on to others when I finish with life."
