Holograph, signedTitle devised by catalogerSamuel May, Jr. writes William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for the gift of "The Life of Mazzini", whom May heralds as "one of the real leaders of humanity's march", with an introduction penned by Garrison. May states that he had previously ordered this work for the town library, and lables it an "important addition to American reading", and asserts that it could provide a "much needed example of fidelity & consistency" to Horace Greeley, whom he only refers to as the "new leader & candidate" of the Democratic Party. May inquires if Garrison is aware of "how poorly our good Richard D. Webb" is faring, stating that Webb's letters give him the impression that Webb has "little apparent expectation of being any better". May writes that he received a souvenir from Oliver Johnson in commemoration of Johnson's late wife. May asserts that he has "greatly lost confidence" in Theodore Tilton
