Description

Holograph, signed. This is a rough draft of a letter by Maria Weston Chapman to Charles Turner Torrey. Chapman is replying to Torrey's letter of Nov. 12 [see Call No. Ms.A.9.2 v.12, p.83], and the reference to a letter from Torrey to Philo C. Pettibone; this is alluded to in Maria W. Chapman's book, Right and Wrong in Massachusetts. On page two of this manuscript, Chapman includes a certificate statement describing the substance of Torrey's letter; this statement was certified by P.C. Pettibone, Ezra C. Smith, and John A. Collins. [The certificate is quoted (but not verbatim) in William Lloyd Garrison, vol. 2, p.262.] In regards to the letters appended to her book, Maria W. Chapman considers them a public concern, "and to suppress them is in my estimation wrong."
