Holograph, signed.Title devised by cataloger.Legacy card catalog lists "Henry John Ripley" as the recipient of this letter. However, it is suspected to be "Henry Jones Ripley," a professor from Newton Center. The letter itself refers to the recipient as "Prof. H. J. Ripley."The manuscript is stamped, "PHELPS, MSS."Amos A. Phelps asks Ripley what he means by “proper assurances” that Clarissa is to remain in the North. Phelps says Clarissa will remain in the North if her husband, Abram, can join her. In case the assurances Phelps has already given Ripley is not “proper,” he will “endeavor to obtain such as will be” if Ripley informs him what they are.
