Description

In 1821, nine women and one man founded the Greenville Baptist Church (the name changed in 1890 by an act of the SC Legislature). According to church records, slaves were listed as church members from 1832 to 1866. Reverend Gabriel Poole organized the Springfield Baptist Church in 1868 and took the black population of the church with him.
