Description

Encyclopedia article about Zell Miller. Zell Miller has been a significant player in Georgia politics since the last half of the twentieth century, serving as mayor, state senator, lieutenant governor, governor, and U.S. senator. Much of his legacy rests on his innovative and far-reaching strides to improve education at all levels within the state. Miller's adaptability to the changing political climate has brought him both praise and criticism over the years, as he has ably negotiated his way through such difficult political issues as desegregation, urban sprawl, and the partisan realignment of Georgia. While his detractors have called Miller inconsistent, his supporters see him as responsive to the wishes of the people. Ultimately he has proved to be a pragmatic and shrewd politician.
