View of Xernona Clayton, broadcasting executive and host of the Xernona Clayton Show, at an event in Atlanta, Georgia.Xernona Clayton (1930- ) is a civil rights activist and broadcasting executive. After she moved to Atlanta in 1965, she began organizing events for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and became a close associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King. In 1967, Clayton became the first African American in the South to host a regularly scheduled prime-time television talk show, which eventually became The Xernona Clayton Show. In the early 1980s, she became the first black woman corporate executive at Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) in her role as Director and Vice-president of Public Affairs.
