Description

This building is known as the Turk-Gilkey House, constructed ca. 1834 and located at 108 W. New England Ave. Henry Turk and wife Dolly (b. 1797, d. 1881) purchased the property in 1856, having most likely lived in the residence for several years prior to that date. The Turks were the first African Americans to own their own home in Worthington. Subsequently, E. Howard Gilkey (b. 1857, d. 1948) purchased the house in 1920. The house became the site of early meetings of the Worthington Garden Club, which was founded in 1929. Florence Gilkey (b. 1860, d. 1937) was one of a group of thirteen women who founded the garden club. E. Howard Gilkey served as Mayor for the Village of Worthington and was a member of the Village Council and Chamber of Commerce.
